Harry Potter Read Along: House Sorting

There are a lot of Harry Potter House Sorting quizzes out there, but I think this Comprehensive Harry Potter Personality Assessment is the most accurate – apart from the quiz J.K. Rowling created for Pottermore, of course. Jillian at A Room of One’s Own sent me this quiz, and I told her I’d pass it on to everyone else participating in the read-along. I’m eager to see where everyone ends up. My results are posted below as well as my reaction.

What the website says about Ravenclaw:

The cardinal traits of Ravenclaw are intellect, wit and openness to experience. They are the most introverted house of the four. Ravenclaws are more likely to prefer small gatherings of like-minded individuals and require re-cooperation after stressful social interaction. These individuals are intuitive creatures, the quintessential researchers. They lack the stubborn, strict, and rule-abiding qualities that would inhibit intellectual growth—one can’t be too set in their ways if they are to be open to exploring new ideas and paths of thought. In contrast to Slytherin and Gryffindor, Ravenclaws in general are much more emotionally stable. Their reactions seem dampened compared to the sometimes dramatic responses of the other houses—they’re much less likely to get offended, they’re more open to criticism, not particularly argumentative and interested in hearing different points of view. They can at times seem to be less interested in people and more interested in their own inner world, and appear to be disconnected from the rest of humanity.

Ambition is secondary to them. Although they may strive to excel in school, knowledge and self-enrichment is the primary goal as opposed to simply wanting good marks. If they do happen to strive for excellence, it is because it fits with their other goals, not out of a desire to be superior or the best. Due to their intuitiveness and willingness to listen, Ravenclaws can be empathetic and make good advisors. They should generally leave leadership roles to people who are more extroverted and who would enjoy them more, however.

Honestly, I’m not surprised by these results. Every sorting quiz has placed me into Ravenclaw, and believe me when I say I’ve done several over the years. A lot of people say that Ravenclaws are reserved for English majors and bookish people, but that’s just a silly stereotype. That works in my situation, but my English major/bookish friends are across the board.

While I don’t identify with all of the Ravenclaw traits, the following are a few key traits that I do identify with:
1. I am mostly introverted.
2. I prefer smaller gatherings.
3. I need to re-cooperate after stressful social situations.
4. Self-enrichment is primary; ambition is secondary.
5. I am a good listener.
6. I leave leadership roles to those who enjoy them.

What house were you sorted into after taking this quiz?
If you’ve taken the Pottermore sorting quiz, how do the results compare to this quiz?
